The Abilene Cowboys sit in 9th place, with 42 points, after the first day at the 4A State Wrestling Tournament at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center. Ark City is in first place with 141 points and look like a lock for a 21st state title. Andover Central a distant second with 89 points. Abilene, who entered the tournament as defending 4A State Champions, won’t walk away this year with the team title, but they could add another individual champion to their proud history. Trey Hoerner entered the tournament ranked #1 at 182 pounds and won the title last year at that weight. He went 3-0 on the day and will wrestle Owen Braungardt, a Junior, from Winfield, with a 38-3 record for the championship Saturday night. The Cowboys still also have three other wrestlers attempting to win medals Will Stroda, Trevor Casteel and Dakota Whiteley. The Chapman Irish lone representative, Erik Lemon, went 1-1 on Friday.
